Ward Melville Companion Forum

For the weekend's homework, see below this post.

Spring is here! Vernal Equinox 2006: March 20th (tommorow), 1:26 PM EST.

We've decided to try out a little experiment. Every night, many of you use the comment feature on the blog to ask questions and to answer questions. While this works well to an extent, we concluded that in order to facilitate this process in a more organized fashion and to have an easy to access record of all these questions and their answers, a web forum would work even better.

The reason it is an experiment is because we aren't really sure if it will catch on, and whether people would have the motivation/time/energy/need to post on this forum. We believe it has potential to be an excellent resource for everyone who uses WMC (and even people who don't use it), but then again it could also stagnate and not really go anywhere. We hope that people can use this forum to ask questions, answer questions, request clarification on things, post suggestions, post announcements, and comment on WMC and ways you think we could expand or improve. We hope that it will basically run itself, with people beyond the administrators answering the questions (of course, all administrators will gain a new position as a moderator on the forum, if they wish). Judging by site statistics, observed use of the comment box, and poll results (88 people voted, meaning probably at least 88 people use the site to some extent), we feel there is enough of a student base using WMC to be able to fuel the forum. The homework will of course continue to be posted on WMC @ blogspot.com every day as usual, the forum is merely meant to supplement the site.

Anyone can post on the forum without making an Invision (the site the forum is hosted on) account, and anyone can post anonymously. You also can create an account if you want personalized browsing and posting on the forum. It would also allow people to create public polls, and people can feel more free to ask more in-depth questions and answer them than in the limited comment section of each post. The forum can be found here:

Remember, its only an experiment...if you like the idea and want to post, go ahead and post. If you think its a terrible idea, then don't post. You won't hurt our feelings either way.

in case I wasn't clear...the forum doesnt replace the main website at all, it supplements it. Nothing changes on the blog itself, homework is still there everyday.

yeah just to re-re-iterate...nothing changes because I made a forum. The main website stays exactly the same. Exactly exactly the same. The forum is an experiment, its meant to supplement the main site. If you don't want to to use the forum, you definitely dont have to.

It's obvious theres always controversy over even the pettiest homework assignments, and what better way to discuss them than a forum where everyone can contribute?

The other people are right Ethan, stick to the blog. I know the form is an experiment but it is to complicated and does not a have good efficiency for extracting information. The comments bar is a much better place to talk about information.

Its apparent that some of you have thoughts on the matter of the forum, and what better way to discuss it than a forum (American Heritage Dictionary - Forum: A medium of open discussion or voicing of ideas). If you want to try it out, i made a forum topic on the subject here:

http://s10.invisionfree.com/WMC_Forum/index.php?showtopic=4&st=0#entry1210084

If you want to post your comment on this topic, just click ADD REPLY and type away...I promise it wont be confusing. If you despise the whole idea of a forum and refuse to participate, then you may certainly keep on using the comments box.
